It’s June, Happy Pride B*tch! 🏳️🌈
Pride month is a great time to reflect on how far we’ve come as LGBTQ+ people and the people that got us here, but I’m gay year round. And we can show that pride all the time!
Picture this: the Stonewall Inn June 1969, mourners gathered on the day of Judy Garland’s funeral (an icon and legend in the community). Emotions are running high and the police wage yet another raid on the gay hangout and this time the patrons decided they'd had enough and fought back. This uprising became a loud and proud battle cry for equal rights.
Fast forward to the 1970s, and the first Pride marches started popping up. The very first one happened in NYC in 1970, marking the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Imagine a sea of people, donning the most fabulous outfits, marching through the streets, chanting, and holding signs that shouted their right to exist and love freely. It was a brave, bold statement that said, "We're here, we're queer, get used to it!"
Gay Pride celebrations have become an international phenomenon. Every June, cities around the world host parades, parties, and events that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community's resilience, diversity, and love. It's a time to reflect on how far we've come, honor those who paved the way, and, of course, have an absolute blast while doing it.
Here are a few ways you can show support for the gay community all year long:
Attend Local LGBTQ+ Events: Pride isn't just a one-month affair! Check out local LGBTQ+ events, film festivals, drag shows, or community meet-ups. It's a fabulous way to show support
Support LGBTQ+ Businesses: Find those local , coffee shops, bookstores, and boutiques owned by our queer family. Your dollar can make a big difference!
Educate Yourself and Others: Knowledge is power! Read up on LGBTQ+ history, issues, and culture. Share what you learn with friends and family to spread the love and understanding.
Be an Ally at Work and School: Whether it's starting a diversity club, advocating for inclusive policies, or just being that supportive voice in the room, making spaces safer and more inclusive is always important.
Go to Gay Bars!: Not only are they super fun and always have the best events but they are also a dying breed. They need our support to survive and provide future generations with their safe space.
Volunteer and Donate: Got some spare time or cash? Consider volunteering at local LGBTQ+ shelters, support centers, or donating to organizations that fight for our rights and well-being.
Use Inclusive Language: Words matter. Make it a habit to use inclusive language and correct any missteps (yours or others’)
