The Dopamine Decor Trend
the way i see it, everything you add to your space should make you happy! The recent trend of ‘dopamine decor' is finally getting everyone else on that train . . .
Dopamine decor is at its core design that makes you happy but often it’s bright colors, patterns, and textures with nostalgic or kitschy elements. Obviously a big part of this trend came from quarantine. We were already stuck in our homes for months and months with no end in sight and some people started to change their spaces. As with many things nowadays TikTok was the source of this inspiration and the sharing of design projects and DIYs, not all good. Do you remember that geometric paint job trend where people were taping off shapes and filling them in in different colors? Yikes. As a realtor who got their license during that time and was showing A LOT of houses, I saw a lot of design trends that I hope I never see again. Dopamine decor is not one of them though. I love walking into someone’s house and feeling like it’s distinctly them. I am immersed in their style, their favorite colors, their idea of comfort. That’s what home should be! A place where you feel the best.
I would pinpoint the TikTok creator @taybeepboop as my first real exposure to this trend. During quarantine I started following her and enjoyed watching her creations. They’re so fun, different, and colorful compared to the all-neutrals style that had become so popular (thanks Kim). But it’s not just about the colors – it’s also about filling your space with things that make you smile. That might be quirky art, funky furniture, or even just a bunch of plants (because who doesn't love a good houseplant?). I’ve got this silly little ceramic hippo - my fav animal- statue that sits on my bookshelf. It’s goofy, it’s kitschy, and every time I look at it, I can’t help but grin. That’s the kind of stuff dopamine decor is all about – creating a space that's uniquely you and makes you happy to be in it.
And, of course, science backs this up! Studies have shown that our environment can greatly affect our mood and mental health. So, why not turn your home into a place that feels like a big, warm hug? Plus, with everything that’s been going on in the world, we could all use a little extra comfort and joy in our lives, right?
So, go ahead, embrace the dopamine decor trend. Splash some color on those walls, fill your home with things that make you laugh, and create a space that feels like a personal paradise. Trust me, you’ll love it as much as I do. And if anyone questions your bright orange couch or your collection of rubber duckies, just tell them you’re all about that dopamine life. Keep smiling, friends!
